Despite failing to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Italy ended the Nations League with victories over England and Hungary. The Azzurri boss tips his side to win the 2026 World Cup.

Italy

earned a 2-0 victory away to Hungary on Monday in the final match of the Nations League to reach the semi-final next year in the Netherlands.

Roberto Mancini

's side finished at the top of the table with 11 points after two consecutive wins, beating Hungary who followed them with 10 points.

However, Italy still feels the bitterness of failing to qualify for the upcoming winter World Cup. However, the Azzurri boss tips his "ambitious" side to overcome this bitterness by winning the

2026 World Cup

, which will be hosted in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Mancini told the

Social Football Summit

:

“We deserved the Final Four of the Nations League, we beat England who could win the World Cup in Qatar.

“The guys put everything into it at a time when their conditions are not optimal, we changed our system of play and they did well.

“To play a World Cup we have to wait another four years, but we want to try to go to America and win, that’s our goal.”

Despite the World Cup qualification failure, the

Euro 2020

winning coach was convinced to stay in the role as the head coach of the national team.

“Everyone was very positive towards me, then winning the European Championship is the best thing there can be in my job.”

The

Italian

opened up about his acknowledgment of the difficulties young players face in receiving a national team call-up.

“When I was young I did almost everything, so I understand the guys. The door to the national team is open to everyone, even to those who didn’t behave right at the moment. Just apologize to your teammates.”
