City’s Akanji compares football in England and Germany

The City defender had his debut in the English top flight against Wolves and tried to compare playing in the Premier League with playing in the Bundesliga.

Manuel Akanji

performed well when

Manchester City

won the battles against

Sevilla

and

Borussia Dortmund

in the Champions League. He now had his Premier League debut in their clash against Wolves. The former Borussia Dortmund defender has started the season on the right foot as they won the encounter 3-0 against Bruno Lage’s side.

Jack Grealish, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden met the back of the net for the Premier League champions in the game. Akanji talked in the post-match interview, telling the difference between playing in Germany and England.

"I felt good,"

Akanji told City's official website.

"The legs are a little bit tired after the game, but I am used to this in the Bundesliga.

"These games in the Premier League are more intense and more physical but I felt great. It felt great to be out there for 90 minutes.

"I think the early goal helped us, especially after the Champions League game that we had three days ago [against Borussia Dortmund] and gave us all confidence for the 90 minutes. With the second goal following we were pretty confident and also the red card helped us.

"In the second half they tried again but we defended well, waited for our chance and took it really well so then the game was basically over. It wasn’t easy, but we got the three points."

City are sitting second on the Premier League table as they head into international break, with

Arsenal

sitting top following their win over Brentford on Sunday. When quizzed if it was crucial to win before the September internationals, the Swiss defender added:

"When you go into the international break with a win it feels good because the next Premier League game is in two weeks.

"Everyone goes to the national team with confidence and hopefully we come back with it."

Akanji may go against Spain and Czech Republic when Switzerland compete in the Nations League as Murat Yakin included him in the squad.
