Lionel Messi wins the 2021 Ballon d’Or award

The 2021 Ballon d’Or award will be held tonight after the last year’s ceremony was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, and Jorginho competing to claim the men’s award.

has won his seventh Ballon d'Or award tonight in a spectacular 2021 ceremony in Paris.

Messi has been named as the biggest contender to win the award after

Argentina

won the Copa America earlier this year, despite having one of his less brilliant seasons at club level.

Last year's prize was largely expected to go to

Robert Lewandowski

before it was canceled due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Lewandowski has scored 73 goals in just 60 games for Bayern Munich since the start of last season, and won FIFA's and UEFA's men's player of the year awards in 2020.
