Newcastle’s Howe: “It’s foolish to make promises about January”

According to Eddie Howe, it would be “foolish” to promise that his side will stop their relegation trouble by spending a lot of money in January.

Eddie Howe

turned 44 on Monday and he celebrated it by getting

Newcastle

ready for their Tuesday battle against Norwich hoping to win a game in the

Premier League

for the first time after 14 games this season.

The club’s new Saudi-backed owners plan to invest in the squad during their reign, but Howe believes it will not be enough to preserve their Premier League status.

When quizzed if he is certain that they will be backed for the January transfer window, he replied:

"I can't make any promises on that, but I can promise that the people above me, the owners, will support the team and support me in trying to achieve what we need. That's all I can say at this time.

"It would be foolish of me to make rash promises or statements. My priority at the moment is to get the best out of the players we have."

Howe was asked whether he subscribed to Rafael Benitez’s “short-blanket” theory that explained his side’s phenomenon of leaving itself exposed by over-committing in attack, he said:

"I don't believe in copying Rafa's statement. 'Stretching the blanket' would be a better way of looking at it for me, coaching and educating and helping the players.

"I don't think there are any limitations on what we can achieve with the group of players we have here. We have to improve performances, improve results and once confidence returns to the team, I think you will see a different team.

"But attacking and defending is always a delicate balance for any team and we just need to get that right."

The Newcastle United coach, who does not have defenders Jamaal Jamaal Lascelles - his captain - and Matt Ritchie available, is going to be in the dugout at St James’ Park for the first time after he missed the last home match due to a positive Covid-19 test.

He is recovering from a sickness that has affected him significantly, and while he is aware that games against Norwich and

Burnley

can be pivotal before December’s fixture list, he is trying to focus on what he can control now.

He said:

"They say the world looks very different on the back of one result, so let's just give everything to that."
