Steven Gerrard favorite for Aston Villa job

The former Liverpool star is the closest option to the Aston Villa bench.

Aston Villa

fired their manager Dean Smith after the defeat to Southampton on Friday and are now looking for a new manager to sit on their bench.

The defeat to Southampton was Villa's fifth defeat of the season, putting the team in the middle of the table despite a lot of investment. Smith is the fifth sacked manager in the Premier League this season, equaling the record for the fastest sacking in the 2004-05 Premier League season.

Steven Gerrard seems to be Aston Villa's most serious option for the bench. Gerrard is currently coaching Rangers  and won the league title with the team last season. They are also the main contenders for the title this season and Aston Villa will have a tough job to satisfy the Scottish club.

Villa directors will have to choose their next manager at the same time as they have to play crucial games against Brighton, Crystal Palace, Manchester City and Leicester.

In addition to Gerrard, Roberto Martinez is another serious option for Aston Villa, who, like Gerrard, is on work and in charge of Belgium. Martinez, who has been Belgium's coach since 2016 and has been able to bring them to the top of the world rankings since 2016, welcomes his return to the Premier League.
