Donnarumma becomes the youngest Italy captain since 1965

The PSG goalkeeper will lead Italy in their Nations League game against Belgium today.

Italy will face Belgium in the match for the UEFA Nations League’s third place on Sunday. The Azzurri were

defeated

by Spain in the tournament’s semi-finals on Wednesday, in a match that saw Italy’s captain Leonardo Bonucci being sent off in the 42nd minute.

Bonucci’s absence due to suspension provides Gianluigi Donnarumma with the unique opportunity to wear his country’s armband for the first time. In his 38th senior appearance for the Azzurri, the former Milan goalkeeper becomes the youngest Italy captain since 1965.

Wearing the armband at the age of 22 years, seven months, and 15 days, Donnarumma will follow Gianni Rivera who captained Italy at the age of 21 years and eight months on April 18, 1965. Italy’s youngest-ever captain is Bruno Nicole, who was 21 years and 61 days old when captaining Italy in their match against Northern Ireland in April 1961.
