La Liga joins European leagues' opposition against new World Cup plans

La Liga joins the Premier League and Bundesliga in taking a stance against FIFA’s plans of staging the biennial World Cup.

Arsene Wenger, FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development,

has been promoting the idea of holding World Cups every two years

as part of the organization's review of the international match calendar and this week repeated his support that more World Cups would be in favor of football.

However, their plans have been met with fierce opposition, and especially in a year that the football world was treated by two entertaining international competitions in Euro 2020 and Copa América.

With a biennial World Cup, not only those competitions would likely be wiped out, but the biggest leagues in Europe also believe the plans would have an impact on the domestic game.

According to

Marca

, La Liga has signed a document which has also been signed by the other 10 top European leagues, including the Premier League and Bundesliga, to oppose FIFA’s plans to change the format of the competition.

The signed document reportedly details the ‘drowning’ of club football’ due to the increased demands that would be placed on players with the presented plans as it seems a bi-yearly World Cup has more opposition than support at this point.

Earlier, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin also expressed his concerns

about FIFA’s plan to hold World Cups every two years.

“UEFA and its national associations also have serious reservations and grave concerns surrounding reports of FIFA’s plans,”

Ceferin wrote.

“Considering the major impact this reform may have on the whole organisation of football, there is widespread astonishment that FIFA appears to be launching a PR campaign to push its proposal whilst any such proposals haven’t been presented to confederations, national associations, leagues, clubs, players, coaches, clubs and all the football community.”
