Dortmund assistant manager: Witsel to Aston Villa rumours are nonsense

The Belgian midfielder has been linked with a move to Premier League in recent weeks.

Following his €20m move from Chinese Super League club TJ Tianhai in 2018,

Axel Witsel

has established himself as a key player in Borussia Dortmund’s midfield. The midfielder has reportedly being targeted by

Aston Villa

, who are linked with a €5 million move for the Dortmund star.

However, Dortmund’s assistant manager

Rene Maric

has denied any negotiations between the two sides.

"It's obvious nonsense, can‘t understand how some people are pretending it‘s not just to make a headline,"

the Dortmund coach

reacted

to a Villa fan who had spoken about the deal.

Witsel has featured in 109 games for Dortmund during his three-year stay at the club. The player has recently been used as a center-back by Dortmund boss Marco Rose, who is trying to compensate for the absence of Mats Hummels.

Aston Villa sold Jack Grealish to Manchester City on a £100 million

move

earlier this summer. The English side have used the raised funds to add a number of new players to their squad. Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey, and Danny Ings have all been added to Villa’s final third. Ashley Young has returned to the club on a free transfer, while Axel Tuanzebe has re-joined Dean Smith's side on loan from Manchester United for the third time.
