Ancelotti clarifies why he subbed Isco in the match against Levante

Mon 23 August 2021 | 8:26

Carlo Ancelotti has given an explanation for why he subbed Isco off during Real Madrid's 2-2 stalemate against Levante.

After

Luka Modric

got injured in the week preceding up to the

LaLiga

match, Isco began at Cuitat de Valencia.

And, to many people's surprise, the Spaniard was one of Real Madrid's good players, turning in a strong first-half effort after struggling for Los Blancos recently.

Ancelotti removed

Isco

, as well as striker

Gareth Bale

, as Levante completed a comeback to take a 2-1 lead inside 12 minutes of the second half beginning.

Given how brilliantly Isco was playing, many questioned Ancelotti's choice, but he claims it was not personal and that he merely wanted to rotate his team.

"The starting lineup that starts the game is never going to finish it," the Italian tactician said in his post-match news conference.

"I want to use the five substitutes because I can put fresher people on.

"Asensio has done very well for me. Isco, Gareth and Hazard have had a good game."

Isco has been tipped with a move away from Real Madrid this summer amid fierce rivalry in Santiago Bernabeu's midfield.

However, with Martin Odegaard's departure, this summer and the aging presence of expected starters Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, his most recent performance might shift perceptions.
