Ranieri: ‘Lukaku’s departure will damage Serie A's discipline’

Romelu Lukaku returned to Chelsea for an eye-catching €115 million fee last week. Giving Inter’s financial struggles, that might sound a relief to their board. However, the Former Sampdoria coach Claudio Ranieri insists losing Romelu Lukaku ‘is not nice’, neither for Serie A or Inter.

After Achraf Hakimi’s €60m sale to PSG,

Lukaku was Inter’s second major sale this summer

“In two months, the Nerazzurri disassembled the Scudetto team,”

 Ranieri

told La Gazzetta dello Sport

: “

Lukaku was fundamental for Inter’s game.

“For Inzaghi, it’s an uphill start, but Simone is very good. I expect a great reaction. It’s certainly not nice for our League to lose the Belgian striker.”

Under the reign of Antonio Conte, Inter won their first Scudetto in 11 years last season. However, after disagreements with

Suning Holdings Group

, the Italian decided to walk away from the job.

The Nerazzurri have been struggling with financial problems but it has been worsened in the last few months notwithstanding grabbing the Serie A title and emerging from UEFA Financial Fair Play restrictions.

With the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea on a deal worth €130m, the club directors, Piero Ausilio and Beppe Marotta would resign, with Simone Inzaghi also not pleased.

The former Nerazzurri CEO Paolillo

told TMW Radio yesterday

“Lukaku proved himself to be the central figure around which a great Inter should be built, so being attracted by this offer means you are sated by one Scudetto and don’t want to build a great future.

“It’s sad that they don’t want to invest or believe in this club. I think it’s the end for Suning at Inter. If nothing else, they’ve proved that they just want to make as much money as possible and keep it going until they find a buyer for the club, at which point what happens will no longer be their problem.

“Had Suning wanted to continue at Inter, they would’ve sold Achraf Hakimi, but then kept Lukaku. This is effectively waving the white flag. I can only hope that Marotta still wants to lead Inter and smooth things over for the new buyer, because it’s for the best now that Suning abandons ship.”
