Bayern's first DFB Pokal match postponed due to COVID-19 outburst

Following the postponement of this week's match at Stadion am Panzenberg, the tie for the second round has also been delayed.

The German Football Association (DFB) has acknowledged that Bayern Munich's first-round

DFB Pokal

match against

Bremer SV

has been postponed owing to a coronavirus epidemic.

Bremer was scheduled to meet the current

Bundesliga

champs on Friday in a pre-season match for the 2021-22 domestic season.

The match has now been postponed as the host side revealed the club's second positive Covid-19 case in as many days, with the entire team now facing a period of isolation.

The DFB have affirmed the news in an

official statement

while also announcing that the draw for the second round of the tournament will now also be moved.

"The management for the DFB-Pokal has cancelled the game scheduled for Friday between Bremer SV and Bayern Munich," the statement read. "The background to this is the officially ordered quarantine measures for Bremer SV.

"The DFB will decide on the rescheduling of the game as soon as possible in coordination with both clubs.

"In addition, the draw for the second round has to be postponed due to the allocation of both clubs to different pots."

Bavarians will now have to wait until August 13 to play their first match of the new season, when they will face Borussia Monchengladbach in their latest Bundesliga defense.

After a four-match losing run in pre-season, new manager

Julian Nagelsmann

may be grateful for the extra training time, especially with some important players still missing following their Euro 2020 adventures.

Nagelsmann was chosen to succeed Hansi Flick earlier this summer and will be entrusted to lead the team to its 10th consecutive Bundesliga title in 2021-22, as well as a good run in the DFB-Pokal and

Champions League

.
