Arsenal joins Everton in race for Schalke striker Matthew Hoppe

Arsenal and Everton are said to be battling it out for Schalke attacker Matthew Hoppe this summer.

The 20-year-old striker represented the USA in the

CONCACAF Gold Cup

, where he has helped his team reach the final, in which they won 1-0 against Mexico.

Hoppe made his

Bundesliga

debut last season, scoring a hat-trick against Hoffenheim within just his third appearance for the club in January. After that, he started to play more often and scored three more goals before the end of the 2020/21 season.

Despite his best endeavors in front of goal, Schalke was relegated from the German top division following a dismal season.

Schalke has dropped out of the Bundesliga for the first time since 1988, with a total of 16 points from 34 games, and has already lost a couple of first-team players.

As per American reporter

Grant Wahl

, Hoppe might be the next to go, having received attention from both

Everton

and

Arsenal

Although the promising starlet has two years left on his present Schalke contract, he is likely to leap at the opportunity to make it to the

Premier League

 if the opportunity arises.

Despite his rapid development in a short period of time, Hoppe is unafraid to be diverted by outside distractions and is committed to growing as a person.

"There's no time to celebrate or to take my foot off the gas," he told the Sirius XM show.

"I think teams got used to, or they started understanding how we wanted to play," added Hoppe on last season's disappointing campaign.

"It was a difficult year with how everything worked out."
