Barcelona sets date for Messi’s contract announcement

Mon 26 July 2021 | 9:59

The Argentine superstar, who has been awarded Ballon d’Or 6 times, officially became a free agent as his contract with Barcelona expired on 30 June.

Although

the re-appointment of Juan Laporta as the Blaugrana’s president

gave the Catalan club’s fans hope to keep their hero at the club, the Argentine has been the headline of the club’s news since last summer with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City closely monitoring his situation.

However, it has been known for some time that the Argentine is keen to extend his 21-year stay at the club.

The latest reports from

Sport

suggest that the agreed contract between the parties will be a five-year deal with a 50% pay cut initially, though much of that will be made upon the back-end due to various clauses and the promise of an ambassadorial role once Messi has hung up his boots.

However, the Blaugrana remain unable to register

Messi’s

contract, or indeed those of their four new signings, until

they bring their salary below the La Liga cap

.

Hence, the club is in talks with senior players over reducing their salaries, while also looking to sell a number of players.

The outlet reports that

Barcelona

are aiming to reach a full agreement within a week with

Messi

, hoping to announce the deal towards the end of the next seven days, even though Messi won’t be eligible to play competitively until that is done.
