Argentina beat Egypt in the second round of Tokyo Olympics

Argentina U23 kept their qualification dreams alive with a 1-0 victory against the Pharaoh on Sunday.

Having earned a hard-fought point from their first match against Spain, Egypt U23 were eager to prove themselves against another one of the gold medal favorites. On the other hand, the Albiceleste were determined to bounce back from their unexpected defeat against Australia in the first round.

Egypt started the game with dominance and managed to create a few serious chances in the first half. However, Shawky Gharieb’s side were not able to convert their chances and the first period ended in a goalless draw.

Argentina took control of the game at the start of the second half and managed to put the Pharaoh’s defense under fierce pressure. Following a deflected header from

, the Lens defender converted the loose ball on the rebound to make it 1-0 for Argentina in the 52nd minute.

After Argentina’s opening goal, Egypt tried to get past Argentina’s backline with long passes. However, the Pharaoh lacked enough composure to turn the game around and the match ended in a 1-0 victory for Argentina.

Argentina climbed their way to second place in the Group C standings, while Egypt slipped to the bottom of the table. Gharieb’s side must win their round-three match against Australia on Wednesday to keep their qualification dreams alive. Argentina will lock horns with

Spain

on the same day as they are determined to topple Australia from the top of the table.
