Coutinho might be frozen out by Barcelona due to contract clauses

The Catalans would have to pay Liverpool another €20million if the Brazilian continues to play for the club after recovering from his injury.

Philippe Coutinho

has become one of Barcelona’s main transfer dilemmas this summer. The Catalans are keen to reduce their wage bill ahead of the next season as they are determined to sign a new contract with Lionel Messi. Coutinho earns a €20million-per-year salary at Barcelona, which puts him among the top earners at Camp Nou. The Blaugrana are looking to sell the Brazilian this summer, with

Everton

being mooted as a potential destination for the former Liverpool star. However, if Coutinho stays at the club, Barcelona might decide to freeze him out of the squad.

According to

Diario AS

, Coutinho is only 10 appearances away from activating a clause that would require Barcelona to pay the Reds another €20million. The Spanish giants are dealing with financial issues and they are determined to avoid activating this clause. The club might start negotiations with Coutinho to terminate his contract before its expiration in 2023.

Having left Liverpool on a €135million deal, Coutinho joined Barcelona in 2018. The Brazilian failed to reach his best form at Camp Nou and was loaned out to Bayern Munich in 2020. The former Liverpool midfielder displayed impressive performances for Bayern and won the Champions League with the German giants. However, upon his return to Barcelona, the 29-year-old suffered multiple injuries that prevented him from continuing his newly-found form under Ronald Koeman.
