Messi won his first trophy with the Argentine national team.

Argentine

football legend Mario Kempes has claimed that even if Lionel Messi wins the World Cup four times in a row, he will still not be better than Maradona.

Messi won the Copa America with Argentina on Saturday and ended his wait for the first national cup. This is the only title he has won with the Argentine national team, while he has won many honors in Barcelona. The 34-year-old star has always been compared to Diego Maradona, the late Argentine legend, and now Kempes has claimed that Messi will never reach Maradona.

He told

ESPN

:

"For Messi, the misfortune is that he was the replacement for Diego Maradona. And it is very difficult to overshadow Diego, with the idolatry that he has received around the world.

"If [Messi] wants to be better than Maradona, he is not going to achieve it even if he wins four World Cups in a row.

"He still hasn't won the World Cup. No matter how many [titles he] wins or what he wins, it can never be compared to what Diego did."
