Mancini proud of writing Italy’s most beautiful page in history

Italy manager Roberto Mancini has said he is proud to have written one of the most beautiful pages of Azzurri’s football history.

Italy

won the European Championship for the first time since 1968 as

Gianluigi Donnarumma

saved two England penalties to secure a 3-2 victory in the penalty shootout after a 1-1 extra-time draw at Wembley on Sunday night.

Mancini

and his men were invited to the Quirinale Palace following their return from London and the coach spoke in the presence of President

Sergio Mattarella

.

“We are proud to be here at the Quirinale,”

Mancini said.

“Thanks to the President for being our first fan, together with the many Italians who cheered us on in London, Munich, Florence, and Rome.

“The country is finally celebrating again, we are satisfied that we could give them these emotions, writing one of the most beautiful pages of our football history.”

Mancini dedicated the win ‘to the Italians’ and praised tennis player Matteo Berrettini, who lost the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

“We dedicate the win to the Italians. Congratulations to Matteo Berrettini, we suffered with him, we are convinced that he will return to win at Wimbledon.”
