A former team-mate of the Argentine international believes he will pen fresh terms at Camp Nou.

when the financial problems are ironed out at the club.

The Argentine hit free agency on Wednesday as his contract expired. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is not holding discussions with other clubs, notwithstanding interest from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, before thrashing out a new deal, the Blaugrana would have to deal with salary cap concerns.

Xavi, Messi’s former team-mate, told

Mundo Deportivo

of an unwelcome headache for those in Catalunya:

"These are market circumstances, we have to wait.

"I imagine he is talking to the club and the president.

"I wish Leo the best, as a friend of his and as a cule [a Barcelona fan], I wish him to continue at Barca. Hopefully, it can be announced as soon as possible."

Joan Laporta

, the club president, has assured that the Barcelona talisman will sign a new contract. However, they need to trim hefty wage bills as many departures are being discussed.

Xavi believes Messi will remain put for the 2021-22 season, adding:

"If I had to bet, I would say that he will continue at the club, although many things have been said in football, but I would say that he will continue.

"Leo needs Barca and Barca need Leo. He is happy in Barcelona; he has spent his life there. I would bet on him renewing."
