Denmark 1-2 Belgium: De Bruyne leads Red Devils to Euro 2020 last 16
Belgium became the second team to book their place in the Euro 2020 knockout stages after coming from behind to beat Denmark 2-1.
Yussuf Poulsen
's strike in the second minute helped the Danes to a surprising early lead, but
Kevin De Bruyne
came off the bench to set up one goal and score another to put
Belgium
into the knockout stage with six points from two matches.
Denmark players were tasked with getting their Euro 2020 campaign back on track, but unfortunately, this challenge was made all the more difficult without the talismanic Eriksen.
Danes, still dealing with the emotional trauma of
Christian Eriksen
’s collapse during their first match against
Finland
, stunned their visitors by taking an early lead. Yussuf Poulsen fired them in front within two minutes. They continued to create problems, but their spirited efforts were undone after the break.
Belgium found the equalizer after 54 minutes when
Romelu Lukaku
charged forward and passed to
Kevin De Bruyne
. The
Manchester Citymidfielder set up the onrushing
Thorgan Hazard
, who was left with a tap-in.
And in the 70th minute, Thorgan’s
brother
Eden Hazard
rolled the ball into De Bruyne’s path. In his first match back since his injury in the Champions League final, De Bruyne sent the ball to the back of the net with his left foot.
Denmark put pressure on for an equalizer in the closing stages, as
Martin
Braithwaite
hit the crossbar, but they remain winless at the tournament so far.
However, they still have a chance of making the knockout stages when they host Russia in their final group game on Monday.
Belgium will take on Finland in their final match on the same day.
