Marchisio: 'Benzema was very close to joining Juventus'

Karim Benzema could have ended up at Juventus instead of Real Madrid in 2009.

Karim Benzema

was close to joining

Juventus

when he was deciding about his future and was unsure whether he should join

Real Madrid

or Juventus in 2009, according to

Claudio Marchisio

.

Now he has gone on to be one of Real Madrid’s greatest-ever goalscorer since he moved from Lyon as he has been able to score 272 goals through 545 appearances.

Interviewed by the

YouTube channel 'Cronache di Spogliatoio'

, Marchisio said of Benzema:

"He is a great player. Benzema was very close to joining Juventus in the year in which Ciro Ferrara was coaching the team.

"It's a pity, given that, after CR7 [Cristiano Ronaldo]'s farewell [from Madrid], only he is scoring ".

Benzema moved from Lyon to Real that summer in a €35 million transfer and has stayed there ever since.

He has continued scoring consistently and has been shouldering the burden of goals even more after

Ronaldo

moved to Juventus in 2018.

He is now fifth on the list of Real’s all-time top scorers - a chart topped by Ronaldo.
