Phoenix extent their six-game winning streak against the Mariners

Wellington Phoenix’s 2-1 win over Central Coast was their first victory of the A-League season.

A-League

with a victory over

Central Coast

courtesy of

’s strike. They were sitting rock-bottom as they head to Sunday’s battle and their victory over the Mariners had been their sixth streak, which was the longest in club history against a single rival, with the other one being Newcastle from 2010 to 2012.

The club manager

Ufuk Talay

is hanging on to hope that this win will get the team urging for further success.

"

Last week we dominated the game for the 90 minutes and we lost,

" he said.

"

Today we played well in the first half but not so well in the second half, but getting the three points was most important to get that boost and confidence within the players."

Ulises Davila scored the opener for the Nix early doors, only for the Mariners’ striker Alou Kuol to pull them level.

"

We created enough chances and had enough ball and had enough possession, but you need the execution,

" said coach

Alen Stajcic

.

"

That little bit of clinical play in the front third and in the box was missing.

"(Stefan) Marinovic did a couple of good saves as well.

"They won a couple of critical moments and in the second half had one go their way.

"I'm pleased with how we played but just disappointed with the result."

Mariners skipper Olivier Bozanic pulled off a significant performance in the second half despite sustaining a dislocated shoulder injury before halftime. Sitting outside the pitch, it was not expected of him to climb off the bench and continue as he did. However, he may not feature in the clash against Melbourne City on Wednesday.

The Phoenix, on the other hand, are set to face Sydney FC next Monday, having a week off.
