PSG Faces Sanctions Over Offensive Chant in Classique Victory
Four Players and Fans Under Scrutiny as Controversy Surrounds Post-Match Celebrations
Four members of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are under scrutiny for engaging in an offensive chant aimed at Marseille fans following their Classique triumph on Sunday. The quartet, namely Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Achraf Hakimi, and Layvin Kurzawa, allegedly chanted derogatory remarks, including profanity directed at the Marseille supporters, as they celebrated their impressive 4-0 victory. This incident was captured in a video shared on social media by Free Ligue 1. Notably, the rest of the PSG squad distanced themselves from this behavior.
Additionally, PSG supporters may also face consequences for purportedly unleashing homophobic chants targeting the visiting team during the match. These chants, which reportedly persisted for approximately 15 minutes, fall within the scope of the French Football Association's definition of discriminatory behavior.
Both PSG and the French Football Association drew criticism from Olivier Klein, the inter-ministerial delegate responsible for combating racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-LGBT hatred (DILCRAH). Klein expressed his profound dismay at the homophobic chants witnessed at the Parc des Princes during the game. He pledged to initiate discussions with the club and the FA, and explore potential legal actions.
Minister of Sports and Olympics, Amelie Oudea-Castea, disclosed that she has coordinated the discriminatory commission for French football. This commission is expected to launch an investigation into the offensive chants. Oudea-Castea urged PSG to identify and remove specific individuals responsible for such behavior from the stadiums. In response, PSG issued a statement, committing to intensify their efforts in combating homophobia and collaborate with partners to address this crucial issue in the days ahead.
