PGMOL Admits Error

Brentford's manager, Thomas Frank, has publicly acknowledged that the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) admitted to a glaring error in the recent clash between Newcastle United and Brentford. The controversy arose when Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon was brought down by Brentford goalkeeper Michael Flekken in the 63rd minute of the match. Referee Craig Pawson consulted with his assistant before awarding a penalty to the home team, which was subsequently converted by England international Callum Wilson, securing a 1-0 victory for Newcastle.

VAR reviewed the decision, but it did not find sufficient grounds to overturn it. This contentious penalty decision left Thomas Frank deeply frustrated, especially since his team had encountered a similar situation during their previous 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. The PGMOL later admitted to making an error in awarding the penalty to Newcastle, ultimately costing Brentford the game.

Frank expressed his frustration, saying, "We just received this key match situations booklet every week, explaining whether the on-field decision was correct or if VAR got it. They actually stated that the on-field decision was incorrect, but VAR was correct because it was not a clear and obvious error. It's frustrating that such a tight game hinged on a borderline decision by the assistant referee. These situations happen, and we'll move forward. Everyone, including the officials, will learn from this experience."
