Antonio Conte leaves Tottenham by mutual consent
Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte has left the club by mutual consent after he publicly criticized his players.
Tottenham confirmed on Sunday that they decided to sack Antonio Conte. His assistant Cristian Stellini will take charge until the end of the season.
Conte's relationship with the club and players broke down recently after he slammed his players as "selfish" and questioned Tottenham’s mentality after their 3-3 draw with Southampton. Conte was out of contract at the end of the season, but Spurs decided to part ways following the Italian’s interview.
"We can announce that head coach Antonio Conte has left the club by mutual agreement,"
a Spurs statement read.
"We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.
"Cristian Stellini will take the team as acting head coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as assistant head coach.”
The 53-year-old Conte was appointed as Tottenham's manager in November 2021 following the sacking of Nuno Espírito Santo and signed an 18-month contract. The Italian manager helped Tottenham qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2019–20.
Spurs are in fourth place in the table after 28 matches this season, but they will finish the season trophyless after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Sheffield United. They also were eliminated from the Champions League against Milan.
Reports in England suggest that former Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino is the favorite to replace Conte next season. They have also been linked with Luis Enrique, Marco Silva, and Julian Nagelsmann.
