Real Madrid to hold urgent board meeting to discuss Barcelona's corruption charges

Real Madrid will hold an urgent board meeting over corruption charges against Barcelona and the club's former presidents.

Real Madrid

announced on Saturday that they will hold an urgent board meeting on Sunday to decide the course of action after

Barcelona

was charged by prosecutors in Spain.

A statement from Real Madrid read:

"Given the seriousness of the accusations made by the Barcelona Prosecutor's Office against FC Barcelona and two of its presidents for well-founded suspicions of corruption and their relations with whoever was the vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees, José María Enríquez Negreira, the president has convened urgently to the Board of Directors tomorrow, Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 12:00 p.m., in order to decide on the actions that Real Madrid deems appropriate in relation to this matter.”

Prosecutors in Spain confirmed on Friday that they have filed corruption charges against Barcelona and the club's former presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu for payments made to the former vice president of the refereeing committee.

The company of former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira received almost €7 million from Barcelona from 2001 to 2018. Barcelona says the payments were for technical reports on refereeing, and insists that such services are common in football.

Reports in Spain suggest that if Barcelona is found guilty, they could face sporting sanctions, but

La Liga

chief Javier Tebas recently said Barcelona cannot face any sporting sanctions in Spain as the matter is time-barred.
