Pioli hopes Milan avoid Serie A clubs in Champions League quarter-finals

Milan manager Stefano Pioli hopes they avoid Italian teams in the Champions League quarter-finals stage.

After a goalless draw against

Tottenham

in London on Wednesday,

Milan

reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 11 years. Pioli’s side managed to beat Antonio Conte’s side 1-0 on aggregate.

After the game, Pioli said Milan wants to avoid Inter or Napoli in the Champions League quarter-finals.

“Italian football is growing. I hope we won’t face Serie A clubs in the quarter-finals,”

said Pioli as quoted by Milannews.

“Milan haven’t played the Champions League for years and we struggled more last season. We have more experience now, we face these challenges with the right spirit.”

Serie A leader Napoli beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 away in the first leg, and Inter also beat Porto at home. Both teams will play the second leg next week. Milan, Bayern Munich, Benfica, and Chelsea already have qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Pioli also said winning the Champions League is not impossible for Milan.

“I like to think there’s nothing impossible in sport. Clearly, only the best in Europe remain and each round gets more difficult, but I am sure that all the experiences in Europe – especially the negative ones – help us to step up a level. Now we must go into the quarter-final with confidence and belief.”

Pioli told Amazon Prime Italia.
