Benfica boss Schmidt absolutely confident that Fernandez will stay at Benfica

One of Chelsea’s main targets in this busy January transfer window has been Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez, whom they’re unlikely to sign

Benfica head coach Roger Schmidt has assured fans that

Enzo Fernandez

won’t leave Benfica, at least in this January transfer window.

Fernandez was one of the key players for Argentina in their road to winning the World Cup in Qatar and ended up winning the Young Player of the Tournament award. Following his impressive World Cup campaign, Chelsea have been relentless in their pursuit of the midfielder but Benfica haven’t backed down, suggesting that Premier League clubs pay his release clause, which is around £106million (€120m).

Earlier in the month, Fernandez seemed ready to force a move which resulted in Schmidt calling him "disrespectful", but the

boss spoke quite highly of Fernandez’s attitude recently when he was asked whether Fernandez would stay at Benfica.

Yes, of course,"

he said about the player remaining in Lisbon.

"When you see Enzo playing for Benfica you can tell he's in shape and happy. He's not thinking about anything else.

"I'm not expecting to lose any of our regular starters. I see the players concentrated and I hope this continues."
