Pele in stable condition after admission to Brazilian hospital

Brazilian football legend Pele is in stable condition after being admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

Brazilian media first reported that Pele who is currently undergoing treatment for metastatic cancer had been admitted to Hospital due to swelling over his body.

Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento later said on Instagram that there was no emergency and he had been admitted so that doctors could regulate his medication. Pele’s daughter said that he was undergoing several tests for a more in-depth assessment of his health issues.

The hospital confirmed on Thursday that Pele did not need to be treated in either the ICU or a semi-intensive unit and was instead admitted into a common room.

A statement issued to the Brazilian media said:

"After medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a common room, without the need for hospitalisation in a semi-intensive unit or ICU.

'The former player is in full control of vital function and [in a] stable clinical condition."

The 82-year-old had a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since been in and out of the hospital for treatment regularly.

Pele is one of the greatest footballers of all time and won three

World Cups

with Brazil.

In his press conference on Wednesday,

Brazil's

manager Tite read out a statement on behalf of Brazil's squad about Pele.

He said:

"We all wish a lot of health to Pele.

"We found out the news from the press. He’s the biggest representative of the national team and we wish him much health. That is the feeling of all the squad, we wish Pele the very best."
