Szczesny tells the story of his penalty bet with Lionel Messi

Juventus goalkeeper claims he made a bet with Messi that the referee wouldn’t award a penalty but he lost the best

Poland hero Wojciech Szczesny saved Lionel Messi’s penalty in

Poland

’s 2-0 loss against Argentina last night but he claims that he made a bet with Messi that the referee wouldn’t give the penalty in the first place, which he eventually lost.

Szczesny who in the match prior to Argentina, had saved Naser al Dawsari’s penalty as well, talked abut referee Danny Makkelie’s decision and the talk he had with Messi, saying: "

We spoke before the penalty. I told him I can bet him €100 that he [the referee] wasn't going to give it. So, I've lost a bet against Messi,"

he said after the match.

"I don't know if that's allowed at the World Cup and I'm probably going to get banned for it but I don't care right now. And I'm not going to pay him either! He doesn't care about €100, come on."

Leo Messi’s saved penalty makes Wojciech Szczesny only the third goalkeeper in history to save two penalties in a single World Cup. the former Arsenal stopper had somewhat of a toned-down celebration since Poland’s qualification to the next round came down to the wire with Saudi Arabia and Mexico’s game going on longer than that of Poland.

"Yeah it was nice, I didn't know at the time it was going to help us get through so I tried not to celebrate,"

Szczesny

said.

"But I've had some bad luck at the big tournaments so far, the World Cup four years ago was awful for me and I owed this much to the team and in the last two games I managed to help them a little bit."

Argentina will face Australia on November 3 but Szczesny and co. will clash with defending world champions France on November 4.
