Spain 1–1 Germany: Germany's Hopes Stay Alive
The two European superpowers met each other in the second game week of Qatar 2022 Group E. Germany wanted to bounce back from their shock defeat to Japan, while Spain wanted a victory to seal their place in the knockout stage.
The earlier match of the group ended with a 1-0 victory for Costa Rica over Japan as matters got more twisted in the group with three 3-pointed teams and Germany at the bottom with no points. Spain dominated the possession against Germany in the first half but failed to reach the Germans' goal while their biggest effort was denied by Neuer.
Meanwhile, Germany scored once in the 40th minute. However, VAR intervened to rule Antonio Rudiger's goal out due to an offside as the two sides went to their dressing rooms on a goalless draw.
Spain finally scored the match's opening goal through
Alvaro Morata
in the 62nd minute as their possession dominance finally paid off. Germany pushed for the equalizer and finally found the net in the 83rd minute through Niclas Fullkrug. With this result, Spain stays on top of Group E table with four points, followed by Japan and Costa Rica each with three, and then Germany at the bottom of the group with one point.
