Gary Neville questions ‘best talent’ Foden’s absence against USA

Former United defender Gary Neville was baffled by Southgate’s decision not to play Foden in their uninspiring draw against USA.

Gareth Southgate chose not to change his winning team that beat Iran 6-2 when they faced USA tonight, which means that Phil Foden once again was left on the bench. A decision that has baffled many pundits including Gary Neville who has been a long time advocate of more

game-time for Foden.

Speaking to ITV, Neville was annoyed by Southgate’s decision, saying: “

I know Phil Foden isn’t playing but for Phil Foden not to be playing for England is a real shame because he’s a massive talent. I think he’s our best player, our best talent by a mile. He should be playing in that team.”

Foden was an unused sub against

despite England needing an attacking threat. He did however feature for 20 minutes against Iran. With Mount’s lack of form at club stage as well as him not having the best of tournaments so far, many believe Foden to be the better choice but Southgate remains unconvinced as the Three Lions head to their last group match against Wales.
