USA delay England qualification till the last day in uninspiring draw

Gareth Southgate’s men came short as they faced off USA in a frustrating 1-1 draw.

Group B is shaping up to be one of the most interesting groups of the 2022 World Cup with

England

’s uninspiring draw against USA leaving both teams as well as Iran strong contenders to qualify for the next round.

Southgate’s side lacked energy as England’s winless run against USA at the World Cup strected to three matches at the Al Bayt Stadium.

While neither side looked particularly good, it was USA that had the upper hand, especially in the first half as Christian Pulisic came very close to scoring by hitting the bar. Mason Mount also came close to scoring but Turner’s diving header denied him.

Both teams seemed even more relaxed in the second half even though

USA

once again had the upper hand. However, they were unable to generate any significant chances and the match remained deadlocked till the end.

Southgate’s men seemed a different team grom the one against Iran and his substitutes didn’t do anything to elevate their performance which bodes ill for them if they are to reach the final stages of the tournament.

England next faces Wales who lost to Iran today while USMNT will face Iran in a match that decides who qualifies from Group B alongside potential group toppers England.
