Canada lose to Belgium despite being dominant throughout the game

Canada lose their first World Cup match since 1986 even though their chances far outnumbered that of Belgium.

Canada’s second World Cup campaign spearheaded by the likes of Alphonso Davies starts with a heartbreak as the Maple Leafs lost to Belgium despite generating 22 shots throughout the game.

. Canada was awarded a penalty in the 8th minute following a Carrasco handball but their misfortunes started from there as Alphonso Davies’ penalty was saved by Courtois.

The penalty wasn’t a wakeup call for Belgium, who were far from their golden days of 2018 World Cup, since Canada pushed again to score but to no avail. Johnston’s strike was saved by Courtois and Buchanan, Atiba and Hutchinson all failed to find the target.

However, Martinez’s men had the upper hand when it came to experience since they managed to score against the run of play. A beautifully placed long pass from Toby Alderweireld found Michy Batshuayi who didn’t hesitate to put it past Milan Borjan.

The second half saw Belgium come into the game a bit more as the Red Devils started to control the possession.

Canada

introduced their all-time leading goalscorer Larin but the Cannucks were unable to score, registering only 3 shots on target in their overall of 22 shots.

Although far from their best, Belgium got the result they wanted before moving to their match against Morocco which will take place on Sunday.

Furthermore, the match also proved to be one for the history books with many World Cup and national records being set. Hutchinson became the oldest outfield starter in World Cup history with 39 years and 288 days and Courtois now holds the record for most major tournaments appearances for Belgium (23).
