FIFA confirms alcohol sales will be banned at Qatar World Cup stadiums

FIFA has confirmed that alcohol has been banned from World Cup stadiums just 48 hours before the tournament starts in Qatar.

Budweiser, a major

World Cup

sponsor, owned by beer maker AB InBev, was set to exclusively sell alcohol within the ticketed perimeter surrounding each of the eight stadiums three hours before and one hour after each game, but now FIFA has changed its policy two days before the start of the tournament following pressure from

Qatar

.

The statement read:

"Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022- stadium perimeters.

"There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar's World Cup stadiums. Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

"The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022."

Those in corporate hospitality at stadiums will still be allowed to drink alcohol. The sale of alcohol is strictly controlled in Qatar and is only allowed in the Muslim nation within hotel bars and restaurants away from street view.

The World Cup starts on Sunday when Qatar plays Ecuador at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor.
