Switzerland captain Sommer boosts World Cup hopes with injury return
Being sidelined after suffering an ankle injury against Darmstadt three weeks ago, Switzerland's Euro 2020 hero was on verge of missing the World Cup. However, he was named in his country's squad for the tournament as Yakin confirms his return.
, who is 33, has played at the highest level for a long time. He has played in the Champions League for both Basel and
Borussia Monchengladbach. He has also played for his country in two World Cups and two European Championships.
However, after suffering an ankle injury in Gladbach’s DFB-Pokal defeat to Darmstadt many believed his World Cup chances are over as his fast recovery made him eligible for
Switzerland’shead-coach Yakin.
Switzerland has named

that saw them defeat then-reigning champions France before losing on penalties to Spain in the quarter-finals.
