Liverpool 2–0 Napoli: Late Magic at Anfield

Napoli traveled to Anfield on Wednesday to win for the first time at Anfield, after three winless matches, as the Serie A leaders were eager to complete a record of winning all of their Champions League group matches this season.

Napoli

started their Champions League showdown, leading both Serie A and their Champions League group. Luciano Spalletti's side is at the top of the table with 32 points in their opening 12 games in Serie A, and have scored 30 goals as well. Also, Napoli has scored 20 goals in 5 games in the Champions League group stage and is on their way to the elimination stage for the first time in the history of the competition.

Meanwhile,

Liverpool

had to overcome a disappointing start to the season. Despite already qualifying for the knockout stage of the tournament, Jurgen Klopp's men just grabbed 16 points from their opening 12 Premier League games, sitting ninth in the table, and 15 points behind the league leaders Arsenal, as well as losing the first-leg to the Partenopei 4-1 in September.

Although the Reds dominated most of the first half, they failed to produce the opener with Meret, denying chances from Salah and Thiago.

Just a few minutes after Jurgen Klopp got forced to Substitute James Milner for an injury, Napoli nearly scored the opener via Ostigard as VAR ruled the goal out. It was

Mo Salah

who finally scored the game's opener in the 85th minute through a rebound after Meret saved Darwin Nunez's header from a corner.

Darwin Nunez

doubled Liverpool's lead in the 98th minute as the Reds celebrated a 2-0 victory over their Italian rivals. Napoli proceeded as the winner of the group and Liverpool as the runner-up.
