Xavi: We played with a little bit of anxiety against Valencia

Barcelona manager, Xavi says his players played with anxiety against Valencia because of their Champions League exit in midweek.

After the Champions League elimination in midweek

beat Valencia in La Liga thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s stoppage time goal.

After the game Xavi said his team deserved to win but their Champions League exit affected their performance.

“We played with a little bit of anxiety. The Champions League has affected us a little,”

he said.

“We played well, but after three quarters the decision-making was bad and it was the result of anxiety.

“I am happy for the victory, the players deserve it. It gives us confidence and morale, we become leaders. We want to finish well (before the World Cup), as high as possible, and put pressure on Madrid.”

Barcelona is now at top of the La Liga table with 31 points after 12 matches.

Real Madrid

who will face Girona on Sunday can go three points clear of Xavi’s side with a victory.

Barcelona also lost Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde to injuries against Valencia as both went off the pitch.

Xavi said:

“Piqué was not wearing boots nor shin guards because he didn’t expect to come on. No time to warm up, either,” he said. “Koundé has strong discomfort, but it doesn’t look like an injury.

"It’s a very important victory, in almost in the last second, and we never stopped believing. We played with anxiety, as the Champions League exit has effected us and we have suffered. We deserved the victory. It wasn’t an excellent game, but it’s vital.”
