Benfica boss urges his side to exploit Juve’s weaknesses

The Benfica coach was prepared for a hard battle against Juventus in the Champions League, talking about their tradition and experience.

Benfica won the battle against Juventus in the Champions League with a 2-1 result last month and they are keen on producing another great performance against the Serie A side tomorrow. The Portuguese outfit sit second in Group H and are five points ahead of the Bianconeri. Should they be held to a draw, the one point would be enough to seal their place in the next round.

Roger Schmidt

spoke during a press conference and reflected on what he wants his side to do for their battle against the Old Lady tomorrow.

“It was a difficult match even there in Turin, then we played a good match. Now it’s a new game, we were focused on the 90 minutes, then we found the right game plan. The situation is clear, we have a small advantage but everyone can still qualify.

“Juventus are Juventus, they have big players, a great squad, they want to go forward. We expect the best Juventus and we are ready to play our best football, we have to think about doing well these 90 minutes.’

He then talked about his expectations from Benfica.

“We have to play a very good game, the group has a very clear situation. But we have to be focused, the goal will only be on the pitch, brave. With the fans on our side, that’s an advantage. We want to make them happy, we want to be in the Champions League next year.”

He went on to comment on Juventus and the level they are at.

“They have experience, tradition, they are used to being on this level. We expect the best Juventus and we have to be ready to exploit their weaknesses. It’s a difficult group and we must not underestimate their commitments.”

The Benfica manager then talked about the injury blows Juventus have been dealing with.

“Absences are always heavy, for everyone. Sometimes it happens to us too, but in modern football we are used to it. We have to find solutions and so will Juventus.”

Benfica looked quite impressive this season and are enjoying a run of 10 unbeaten matches, leading the Primeira Liga.
