Shakira reveals why she decided to divorce Barcelona's Gerard Pique
Following 11 years of being together, Gerard Pique and Shakira decided to divorce this June. After months of silence, Shakira finally reveals the reasons they separated.
After they first met in 2011 when
Shakiraappeared for her 2010 World Cup single, Waka Waka, the duo started a relationship that resulted in two children, aged nine and seven. However, the
Barcelonadefender and the Colombian singer announced their separation in June.
Speaking to
Elle, Shakira revealed she wasn't able to live her favored "nomadic" life after their marriage. She said:
"As a soccer player, he wanted to play football and to win titles and I had to support him.
"I mean, one of the two of us had to make a sacrifice, right? Either he would stop his contract with Barcelona and move to the U.S. with me, where my career is, or I would have to do that instead.
The Colombian singer claimed she sacrificed her life for her late-husband,
Pique
.
"One of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice. And I did it. I put my career in second gear and I came to Spain, to support him so he could play football and win title,”
Shakira added
.
And it was a sacrifice of love. Thanks to that, my kids were able to have a present mom, and I have this amazing bond with them that is unbreakable and that sustains us. You know, that is it. That’s all I can say.”
