Ivan Toney reveals his passion to push for the England World Cup squad
After getting his first England call-up to replace injured Marcus Rashford for their Nations League matches, Ivan Toney expresses his passion to break into Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad.
Playing a key role in
Brentford'sfirst ever Premier League promotion, the youngster also helped the Bees survive last season as his great form finally caught Gareth Southgate's attention to give the 26-year-old his first England call-up for this coming international break.
The 26-year-old striker has scored 17 top-flight goals and registered six assists in 39 appearances for the Bees since their promotion to the Premier League.
With the injury struggles of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ollie Watkins, Patrick Bamford, and Marcus Rashford,
Ivan Toneyrevealed his passion to use his chance to break into Southgate's World Cup squad for this November.
"
This is my opportunity now,"
he stated.
"I've got to take it with both hands. I'm excited, I'm confident, I'm very hungry.
"I've been working for this moment and here it is now, so I'm not going to let it go by me, by any means."
Toney's
Englandcall-up has been controversial as the
Jamaican
Football Federation last year tried to persuade him to declare his allegiance to them. Toney continued to explain his priorities:
"I turned them down because at the time I was focusing on the play-offs.
"That was the main thing, and then it kind of fizzled out. I felt like my chances were getting bigger and bigger to play for the England squad."
England will face
Italy
away on September 23 before hosting
Germany
three days later.
