Portugal star announced retirement from international duty

The Benfica striker decided to retire from Portugal national team for personal reasons.

striker, who was a member of the Euro 2016 and the 2018-19 Nations League champions team, also participated in the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2020. He had a good start at the club level and managed to score 4 goals in 7 games and was included in Portugal's squad for the Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and Spain. However, the 29-year-old striker announced that he is retiring from Seleção for personal reasons and called his decision honest and right.

He said:  

"The national team will continue to bring joy to the Portuguese, from the very beginning in the League of Nations and the 2022 World Cup."

The Portuguese Football Federation also reacted to this issue and praised Silva by releasing a statement. The statement reads: 

"The FPF Board respects the decision taken by Rafa, who with us lived the two biggest achievements of the national team, Euro 2016 and the League of Nations.

"Rafa will forever be one of ours and he deserves our recognition and thanks."

Portugal has been placed in Group H of the competition along with Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea in Qatar. It is expected that this will be the last World Cup in which Cristiano Ronaldo will play.
