German minister wants Russia and Belarus banned from Euro 2024

German federal minister of the interior has asked UEFA to exclude both Russia and Belarus from the qualifying draw for Euro 2024.

Last February, FIFA, and UEFA both decided to ban

Russia

and

Belarus

from their competitions until further notice following Ukraine’s invasion by Russia.

UEFA also in May confirmed that Russian clubs can not participate in their continental competitions in the upcoming season.

Russia’s participation in the UEFA Euro 2024 which is set to be held in

Germany

is unclear at the moment and now German publication Der Spiegel has published a letter from a senior German official who has requested both Russia and Belarus to be excluded from the qualifying draw for this tournament.

According to Der Spiegel, German federal minister of the interior Nancy Faeser wrote to UEFA:

”Not only Russia, which is waging a war of aggression in violation of international law, but also Belarus as an essential supporter of the Russian leadership should be excluded from all international football matches and tournaments."

Faeser also added:

“football must live up to its responsible role and show a united stance against this form of disregard for human rights. All those responsible must be deprived of any possibility of sporting participation, influence or other representation.”

According to reports, UEFA has confirmed that they have received Faeser’s letter.

Ukraine Association of Football president Andriy Pavelko also recently said Russia should be excluded from the qualifying draw.

The qualifying draw for Euro 2024 will take place on October 9.
