Pep Guardiola warns City cannot rely solely on Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland has started the season in devastating form, but Pep Guardiola does not want Manchester City to take him for granted.

Manchester City

won't win the

Champions League

if they only rely on the Norwegian.

Haaland has had a great start at City. In his first six

Premier Leagu

e games, he scored 10 goals, which tied the record for the fewest games needed to reach double digits. Before the season started, some people said Haaland might need a little time to get up to speed, but his early play has shown that they were wrong.

But many people think City didn't sign Haaland to make a difference in the Premier League. Instead, they bought him to make a difference in the Champions League, where the margins are much smaller. Since they took over in 2008, City has spent a lot of money, but they still haven't won the UCL.

They've only been to the final once. The hope is that Haaland gives an already great City team what they were missing, but Guardiola knows they can't take him for granted.

"Every player tries to make us better because if they don't, it doesn't make sense," he told reporters before Group G's first game against Sevilla on Tuesday. Does that help us win championships? I'm not sure. We can't win the Champions League if we put all our hopes on Erling. We try to set him up with chances to score goals."

"We talked him into coming here because we didn't think we had enough strikers. He tries to join in with our games. Like

Julian Alvarez

and other players, he is good at settling down. I know everyone talks about Erling, but I have three, four, or five new players, and it's important that they all settle in."

"We don't win or lose just because Erling is in it. He is unique and might be able to help us solve some problems, but if we don't play well, we won't win games." Most people will think that City is the clear favorite on Tuesday.

They will play

Sevilla

, which has only one point from its first four LaLiga games and the worst record of all teams in terms of expected goals against in open play (6.3). The departures of Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos have been a problem, but Guardiola still admires their European pedigree. He knows that City's history on the continent doesn't compare to Sevilla's six UEFA Cup/Europa League titles, but he still thinks their European pedigree is something to admire.

"This is a tough competition, and we're happy to be back," he said. "It will depend on how we play on the field tomorrow against Borussia Dortmund and Copenhagen. If we don't do well, we go home and get punished by fans and the media. After that, we move on.

"We fought to be here last season, so we know how hard it will be. Spain has a lot of teams in Europe, and I'd love to have a story like Sevilla's. City are a long way from Sevilla in Europe, though. Don't miss the big show tomorrow in this stadium. We will just try to play well and win three points."
