Former Dortmund left-back Gomez appears on Manchester City's radar

With Oleksandr Zinchenko joining Arsenal earlier in the transfer window, City has been on the hunt for a left-back and they suffered a blow when their primary target, Marc Cucurella, is closing on a move to Chelsea. As a result, the Citizens have directed their attention toward Anderlecht's Gomez.

Joining Anderlecht from Dortmund in June 2021,

Sergio Gomez

was quick to become a fan popular as he was voted the club's Player of the Year last season after making 49 appearances under former boss and ex-City captain Vincent Kompany, and now according to

Goal

, he has become a target for Pep Guardiola’s side. The former Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund defender is expected to be in addition to any move for a first-team full-back and is unlikely to become a regular City player.

Starting as an attacker during his time at La Masia, Gomez was dubbed as the 'new Iniesta' during his time at Barcelona before making a €3m switch to

Dortmund

, where he only could experience 10 minutes of first-team appearance.

Brighton's

Marc Cucurella

was reported as City's top target, however, they refused to meet Brighton's £50m asking fee as Guardiola currently has right-back Joao Cancelo, academy product Josh Wilson-Esbrand, and centre-back Nathan Ake as his options.

Guardiola before

Manchester City's

Community Shield 3-1 loss to Liverpool:

"If it's possible [to strengthen we will] but if not, we stay with the players we have.

"Joao can play there, Josh can play there, Nathan can play there. I never complain about the squad I have since the first season. It is always for the benefit of the club, not for me, and I support the club."
