Doherty: Tottenham pre-season under Conte like 'torture'

The Italian manager is performing intense workouts to boost the physical fitness of his players.

Matt Doherty

, an Irish fullback for

Tottenham

, said that head coach

Antonio Conte

's training sessions are like "mental torture" and that this is the most demanding preseason he has ever been through.

Recently, photos and videos on social media seemed to show that the Tottenham players were having difficulty keeping up with Conte's training schedule.

In an effort to get the Tottenham players in better shape, Conte's coaching staff had them do a running drill. When it was over, all of the players fell to the ground. Doherty said that the running training might have seemed normal to the players, but he admitted that he had never been through such a challenging preseason workout.

When the new season starts, Doherty is sure that Tottenham will be one of the best-prepared teams in the Premier League.

"Yeah, pretty typical" (the running drill). Even the week before in London was like that, so I'm not sure if any other teams will be fitter than us. It's different from anything else I've done. This is not easy. Doherty told

The Athletic

that this was the hardest preseason he had ever had.
