World Cup organizers told UEFA rainbow flags will be well-received

The UEFA Working Group has conducted its third visit to Qatar as the World Cup draws closer.

According to the UEFA working group, assurances were provided regarding fans being safely welcomed with rainbow flags during

World Cup.

It is illegal in Qatar to be homosexual or queer in other ways, however working group says Qatari authorities will welcome everyone to Qatar providing they respect the nation’s conservative customs.

UEFA says that the visit reinforced that changes are taking place and acknowledged that the World Cup has accelerated change in a positive way.

Michele Uva, chair of the UEFA Working Group, said:

“We can look back on more than one year of activities, with seven Working Group meetings and three site visits to Qatar. We are thankful to the Supreme Committee and all institutions involved for the openness in our dialogue and search for solutions in view of incorporating human rights considerations as an essential pillar of sustainable football events.”

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that this week they presented the Supreme Committee, the body in charge of organizing the World Cup, with a series of direct questions related to LGBTQ+ fans and their concerns, but received no specific answers.

A general reply said to Guardian:

“Everyone will be welcome to Qatar in 2022, regardless of their race, background, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. We are a relatively conservative society – for example, public displays of affection are not a part of our culture. We believe in mutual respect and so whilst everyone is welcome, what we expect in return is for everyone to respect our culture and traditions.”

A member of the LGBTIQ Human Rights Sports Coalition also says the group had been in discussion with Qatari authorities for nearly two years but had yet to receive categorical safety assurances.
