Capello calls Pioli and Mourinho best Serie A coaches

Sun 26 June 2022 | 20:21

Fabio Capello thinks his former clubs, the Rossoneri and Giallorossi, have the best managers in Serie A when the coaches ended trophy droughts in the previous season.

Stefano Pioli

and

Jose Mourinho

are the two best

Serie A

coaches after they led

Milan

and

Roma

to silverware in the 2021-22 season, says Fabio Capello.

The former Milan and Roma boss says Inter’s interest in a move for Romelu Lukaku is a “blow” for the rest of the Italian top flight, considering his dominant performances in a great first spell with Inter.

While Pioli is the first Rossoneri manager to deliver the Serie A title since Massimiliano Allegri in 2010-11, Mourinho put an end to the trophy drought of Roma after 14 years when he guided them to the Europa Conference League victory during his first season in charge of the club.

Capello, who helped Milan win the Scudetto four times in five seasons back in 1991 to 1996 before contributing to Roma’s Serie A win in the 2000-01 season, praised the achievement of the two managers.

"The best? Pioli and Mourinho,"

he told Il Messaggero.

"The first brought Milan back to success, the second confirmed himself as an international coach. Jose achieved a very important success.

"[Juventus coach] Allegri, [Lazio's Maurizio] Sarri and [Napoli's Luciano] Spalletti paid for their return to Serie A. They were granted a transitional season. Now will be the moment of truth."

While the Nerazzurri are considering re-signing Lukaku only a year after his £97.5million move to Chelsea, some big names in the Italian football spoke about the situation.

Capello believes

: "Lukaku is a great blow because in Italy, no one is able to mark him because of his excessive physical power."

Capello praised Milan’s recruitment policy and insisted that they can compete and defend their title.

"I don't put my mouth on the market because these topics are the responsibility of the coaches,"

he added.

"The experience of recent years leads me, however, to say that we must have confidence. At Milan, they have learned how to handle things, and they know how to choose [players]."
