Florian Wirtz extends Bayer Leverkusen contract

Bayer Leverkusen star has signed a new contract with the club.

Bayer Leverkusen

has announced that

Florian Wirtz

has extended his contract until 2027.

His last contract was expiring in 2023 and big European teams like

Bayern Munich

and Real Madrid were interested in him but in the end young German international decided to stay at Leverkusen.

The 19-year-old midfielder has scored 19 goals and provided 22 assists in 78 games for Leverkusen.

"From my point of view, the development in the past two years was almost breathtaking and certainly not foreseeable in this form. It's clear to me that I also owe it to the team, with whom I have incredible fun,"

  Wirtz told Leverkusen's official website.

"The guys are a key reason why I feel comfortable here and why things have gone so well overall. There's a lot in us and in this club. We want to show that to all Bayer 04 fans and everyone else as well,"

added the highly-rated youngster.

Wirtz suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March and missed the rest of the season. It is unclear whether he can play again in 2022.

"Things are going well so far,"

Leverkusen coach Gerardo Seoane recently told DPA when asked about Wirtz's recovery.

"It could be that things go quickly [while] it also depends on how disciplined and hard-working [Florian] is.

"[He could return] in October or probably November. If he's fit and can train, he might get a call-up to the squad [this year], but I don't expect Florian back until 2023,"

the Bayer tactician added.
