Hungary boss Rossi on beating England and Italy game on Tuesday

The Hungary coach talked about his side vanquishing England in the Nations League and how they are getting ready to face Italy, but he thinks Italy ‘had to repay all their previous good luck with interest’ in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

coach in 2018 and has helped them develop a lot, as they reached the group stage of Euro 2020, where they drew their games with

and

.

They began their Nations League season by vanquishing England 1-0 with the penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai. His side will also get ready to face Italy on Tuesday.

“I saw the team I wanted against England: concentrated and motivated, which isn’t easy at the end of a long season,”

Rossi told Calciomercato.com.

“I think it was a deserved victory, we had several chances to score another goal, including one huge opportunity. No coach prepares his team to lose, we know that often we’re playing against teams who are far stronger than us on paper, but we can still snatch a few points off them.”

The Azzurri could not get World Cup qualification after they lost to North Macedonia in the play-off.

“If they play that game again 99 times, Italy will always end up the winner. The problem is in the World Cup campaign, Italy had to repay all the good luck that accompanied them on the road to the EURO 2020 trophy – with interest. You need luck to win any tournament.

“What are the odds in qualifying of Jorginho, the best penalty-taker in the squad, getting two wrong in a row? All he needed was one and Italy were qualified.

“I think it was the right decision to keep going with Mancini, because there’s no point throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The only alternative could’ve been Carlo Ancelotti, who was not available, so it’s right to continue with someone who proved they can win.”

However, the Hungary tactician had a warning for Serie A sides and the FIGC.

“Where Italy really are in trouble is their stadiums, they are so far behind. Even in Hungary, the situation is 100 times better than in Italy. Every club in the first and second division has their own modern stadium, training centre, space for the academy and focus on youth.

“In Italy the stadiums are incredibly old and it looks horrible. I went to Naples to watch one of my players in action for RB Salzburg, but then ended up watching on TV, because you can’t see anything from the stands, it’s too far away from the pitch.”
