Steve McClaren & Mitchell van der Gaag to join Man Utd coaching staff

According to 90min, Steve McClaren has decided to return to Manchester United as a senior-team coach under new official head coach Erik ten Hag.

Mitchell van der Gaag, Ten Hag's Ajax assistant this season, has also accepted the deal with the

Premier League

club, and the new manager is thrilled to have secured the coaching staff he desired. Others will follow, but McClaren and Van der Gaag are considered particularly important to his new initiative.

From 1999 to 2001, McClaren served as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager, assisting on the club's memorable triple just months after coming to Old Trafford.

After working together at FC Twente, the 61-year-old is good friends with the new

Manchester United

manager Ten Hag. Since his own hiring in April, Ten Hag has been pressing for McClaren to accompany him in Manchester.

McClaren's job will need him to spend a lot of time on the training ground as he did during his first stint at United. Ten Hag is notably eager to tap on Ferguson's expertise and experience of the club during the club's golden years.

Ten Hag started working with the Red Devils this week and wasted little time getting to know the club. However, interim coach Ralf Rangnick is still in command of the first team for the next few days and will lead the club for the final time against

Crystal Palace

on Sunday.
